In 1989, AMECON (later, Transfield Shipbuilding/Tenix and now BAE) was awarded the construction of the Anzac class based on the Blohm + Voss (today Lurssen) designed frigate.

The ships were consolidated at the Williamstown shipyard in Victoria. The hull blocks were constructed at the Tomago, New South Wales facility. Eight ships were built from the first laydown in November 1993 to final commissioning of the last ship in August 2006.
